Federal Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd, has welcomed today’s announcement that the Coalition Government will alter legislation to include Carbon Capture and Storage technologies to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

“This is fantastic news because it further strengthens the case for a new ultra-supercritical coal-fired power station in Gladstone.

“Gladstone is the clear choice for a new power station as we look to the future power needs of the state and the country.

“We have the saltwater, we have the coal, and we have the power network, all vital elements for a long-term efficient, viable power station.” Mr O’Dowd said.

Carbon Capture and Storage technologies were deliberately left out of the original Clean Energy Finance Corporation legislation in 2011 because of horse-trading between the minority Labor government and their Greens partners. Despite much of Labor’s caucus agreeing to include the vital emissions-reducing technologies, they were stymied by Greens senators who hate coal production and those who rely on it to put food on the table.

“It was another case of the green tail wagging the red dog.

“A new power station would serve Gladstone well, providing jobs and providing certainty of supply for those who are terrified of Queensland following South Australia’s lead.

“Ultra-supercritical power stations exhibit cutting-edge technologies, allowing them to create more electricity from the same amount of coal.

“This technology, when teamed with CCS, can produce far fewer carbon emissions and could unlock the future of sustainable electricity for the nation.

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation will continue to provide finance under strict guidelines that focus on emissions, economic, and financial outcomes.
