Rookwood Weir EIS Approved

Experienced Federal Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd, has welcomed today’s announcement that the Environmental Impact Statement for Rookwood Weir has been signed off by Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg.

Mr O’Dowd said the project, which is set to provide up to 400 construction and 2,100 ongoing jobs, was one step closer and left only the Queensland Government in the road of progress.

“Rookwood is a vital project that has both the potential to drought-proof Central Queensland and provide a $1 billion boost to the local agriculture sector.

“I am calling now on the Queensland Government to commit funding to the project and get the show on the road.” Mr O’Dowd said.

Despite the obvious economic benefits of the project and the federal government having already put up half the construction cost, Queensland Labor representatives have refused to support the project. Mr O’Dowd questioned today why a similar commitment to that of the Federal Government was not being jumped at.

“Back in May, we made a commitment to put $130 million toward building Rookwood, pending the results of the business case; I really can’t see why a similar commitment from the State Government is so difficult for the people of Central Queensland to attain.

“It might be another case of the Green tail wagging the Labor dog as inner-city latte-sippers determine the water infrastructure and employment requirements of the regions.

“It’s as if they sit around the cabinet table and say, ‘Oh no, you’re not from Brisbane, you can’t have water security, you don’t need thousands of jobs.’

“I’m sick of it and think it’s about time the local ALP state members showed some spine on the issue.” said Mr O’Dowd.

“This project affects the whole region, from Biloela, to Gladstone, to Duaringa, Rockhampton, and Yeppoon; it should be bigger than politics, it should be built.”
