Shoalwater Master Plan Finalised
- Master Planning Finalised
- Expansion area ‘significantly reduced’
- No forced sales
Federal Member for Flynn, Ken O’Dowd, has welcomed today’s announcement by Defence Minister Marise Payne that Defence has finalised its master planning activity for upgrades to its Shoalwater Bay training area.
Following initial rounds of consultation with local landholders and residents, the master planning has confirmed that Defence can meet the future training needs of the ADF and the increased training with the Singaporean Armed Forces through purchasing land from willing sellers.
Mr O’Dowd said he was pleased with the more consultative approach taken and believed a ‘significantly reduced’ expansion area will be well received, locally.
“One of the main questions previously was just how much new land Defence actually needed, it would appear that need is not as large as first feared.
“Defence has assessed a smaller expansion of Shoalwater will be possible using only willing sellers and a number of specific measures to achieve the desired training outcomes.
“This is the outcome we were after – a smarter approach not just bigger grounds.” said Mr O’Dowd.
Defence will now engage in consultations with landholders in the area who have previously expressed interest in selling and those who approach in the future.
Defence will not identify the location of individual sellers due to privacy requirements and commercial-in-confidence nature of the discussions.
Submissions for the KPMG socio-economic study close on March 6 and Mr O’Dowd encourages the community to have their say.
